neither_a_nor_b: (Switched at Birth)

I felt you in my life before I ever thought to

When she’d woken up on the morning of the 22nd and found herself still in one place, Bay had breathed a sigh of relief. The last couple birthdays had been kind of a crapshoot for her and Daphne, ending up in a new dimension every other year so it was nice to actually make it a year in one place.

Sure, it was almost Halloween and sure something was probably doomed to go to hell before the end of the month, but not today. Today Daphne had made a cake and some mexican rice and was planning a shrimp taco spread. Bay was cooking up some ground beef with spices while the contents of the alcohol cabinet waited for her to do some mixing later. They’d sent out invitations to their friends via text, and both were looking forward to a chill, low-key birthday party for their 19th.

Daphne had made sure not to book any catering jobs for today, but she still had her daily orders for some of the local coffee shops and service stations in the city. She’d gotten those taken care of, then come home and baked and frosted the cake and helped Bay clean and decorate. If she wanted to last more than 20 minutes at her own party, though, she’d decided a nap was a good idea.

She woke feeling much more refreshed and coherent and wandered out to find Bay cooking up ground beef for the red meat eaters that would be attending. “Hey,” she greeted her sister, peering over Bay’s shoulder into the pan before stepping back. “I’m going to get changed while you finish that up, then I’ll get the shrimp cooking while you get ready. Sound good?”

“Yeah, sounds good. I just got a slew of ‘on my way’ texts but the taco filling is ready.” Proving her point, she took the beef off the stove and tipped all of it into a serving bowl. “I’m gonna stick it in the microwave, so we can nuke it if we need.”

“Actually, I’ve got a better idea.” Daphne grinned and ducked into her room, coming back out with a large box. “I bought myself a birthday present, sort of,” she explained, opening one end of the box and starting to pull out the pieces to the new electronic warmer she’d picked up yesterday. “Just give the dishes a quick wash and we should be good to go. This should keep the food warm through the whole party. Beef in one, shrimp in one, and rice in the third?” She shoved the packing materials back into the box, ready to tuck into her closet just in case something went wrong and she needed to return it.

“That is so fancy,” Bay said, genuinely impressed as she scraped the beef into the first dish. “Okay, you change, I’ll clean.”

“Okay.” Daphne went back into her room, stashed the box and quickly changed, then stopped in the bathroom to pull her hair back and put a little makeup on before taking over in the kitchen so Bay could get ready, getting her shrimp cooking as she made sure all of the food and mixers were ready for people’s arrival.

It didn’t take much time for her to get ready. Bay took a quick shower to get the smell of food out of her hair and off her skin. By the time she was finished blow-drying, Bay heard the first knock on the door. The party had started.

"That too," I agree, knowing that it's a newer impulse, one that I've only been able to indulge in the past couple of years. "I used to get my painting urges out decorating cookies, so..."

"Na zda-ró-vye!" Juno manages the toast, but she knows that she'd prefer less Russian speaking to more. "Somewhere in the middle?"

"A painting. For the both of you." She asks, and I'm nervous again. I hand that over and just hope that she likes it. "It isn't anything much."

"Sounds like a pretty accurate summary of college to me." Allison admitted, more gently than playful as she gave Juno's shoulder a squeeze before turning her attention back to the food on the table. "I mean, at least what I'm expecting, being a senior this year. Though honestly, I haven't given college a whole lot of thought."

After all, she had so much else going on: training the family, the Alpha's work...taking care of her pack in general. College had always been a consideration, but she was starting to wonder if it was feasible, at least right now.

She wasn't even sure what she'd study, anyway. At the end of the day, she was a hunter...and they didn't exactly give out degrees for werewolf and vampire slaying.

"So? You totally get kiss credit for the beef then." Allison giggled, melting into laughter at the look on Bay's face as she shook her head. "Fine, we won't give Scott an aneurysm today. Maybe later."

When they reached the table, Allison eagerly picked up a plate and started fixing herself some tacos, silent for a moment as she warred with herself...then finally glanced at Bay with a sheepish smile.

"Is it...weird if I ask how you guys are? You and Scott, I mean. Are you...good?" It felt slightly awkward to ask, but it was a sincere question. Bay was pack, Scott was...Scott, he was hers and he always would be, and knowing he was happy was vital to her own happiness.

Knowing he and Bay were both happy together...maybe it was equally weird, but it made her even happier.

It might be a casual birthday party but that didn't mean that Daphne and Bay weren't getting something from Cissie. It had taken her awhile but she had made them each a charm bracelet. She had cast the metal for the bracelets herself then gone around hunting for the perfect charms to put on them.

She set the carefully wrapped gifts on a table then went to look for the birthday girls. First the greeting and then the taco feasting. And okay, greeting the other guests too.

But tacos. Tacos were important.

"I never really celebrated birthdays." It's another way that I feel different from most people. We counted the years we had at a reaping, rather than celebrating birth years passing. "Summer. Late summer."

"I can say cheers in about ten languages. Stupid things you learn when you're supposed to be studying other things." Juno smiles and shrugs, watching her make the drink. "Even the Darrownet will teach you something."

"Neither had I until the letter showed up in my mailbox." She had filled out the application because she'd been told to, not from any particular desire to go. Then one day there it was, almost taunting her.

"I thought about taking a year off. But I dunno. Somebody talked me into giving it a try."

Scott set down his half-filled plate and turned around to give her a proper hug and a kiss. "Shut up, you were busy. I was being polite." He grinned and kissed her on the nose. "Happy birthday."

Daphne looked down at her arm where his hand had touched, then back at his face and smiled again, nodding. "Thanks," she said, comprehending the emotion behind it, if not the precise sentiment. "I'm glad you came." She wanted to get to know this boy better, and she hoped he might want that, too. Despite the fact that he could hear, she felt a kinship with him that she hadn't felt with really anyone since she'd been whisked away from home over four years ago, now. He could hear, but he, too, knew what silence in a world of sound was like, in his own way.

Daphne laughed, shaking her head a little. "It's a bit more complicated than that. We're not actually related at all," she explained, amused. Once upon a time it had been an awkward dancing around of words to explain her relationship with Bay, but over time they'd just kind of evolved to this point, and it was strange to be taken back to those early days with what was really an obvious question.

"She and I were switched at the hospital when we were born. We went to the wrong families, and didn't find out about the switch until we were 15."

"Bay knows where my heart lies," Scott joked as he made himself multiple tacos. It was still a little weird, being friends with Allison with everything that had been between them, but he was glad they were making it work. He would hate to have lost her completely when things didn't work out. "And hi. How are you?"

"Thanks, you didn't have to get me anything." She grinned and accepted the plant, thinking it was actually a pretty cool gift. "I love it."

She nodded, cradling the bamboo plant against her chest. "Cool. In that case just grab some tacos and a drink and hang out. We'll probably play some games or something once everyone is here, or whatever everyone wants to do. We just wanted a really chill party with some friends," she explained.

"Thank you. I woke up in the same place I was yesterday, so that's a point in its favor already," Daphne joked. It was sort of true, though. Every year around their birthday, both she and Bay tended to get a little nervous. They'd both shown up on the island right around their 16th, and then here on their 18th, after all.

He was more comfortable in silence. If it got too loud, it could be overwhelming. Maybe even if she couldn't hear, she knew that.

He looked around, at the food and pointed, his face a question. Did she make this like she had those sandwiches?
